An Introduction to Sleep Disorders in Children

Sleep Disordered Breathing

Don't ignore the snore! Obstructive sleep apnea and sleep disordered breathing do occur in children and they often go undiagnosed for many years. Focus problems, inattentiveness, hyperactivity, and behavioral problems can all be manifestations of poor sleep quality triggered by abnormal breathing.

Insomnia

Difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep is not uncommon, but it can become chronic in children for a variety of reasons. These conditions can arise from behaviors and poor sleep habits, undiagnosed medical conditions, and a complex mixture of triggers that need attention. Many special needs kids and those with neurodevelopmental disorders are especially at risk.

Movement Disorders

Some movement during sleep is normal, others go far beyond tossing and turning. Involuntary movements during sleep can disrupt normal sleep, contribute to unexplained awakenings, and sleepiness during the day.

Narcolepsy and Hypersomnias

These conditions primarily appear during adolescent and preadolescent years, an already difficult time for many teens when school demands can keep with normal sleep needs. Children and teens with hypersomnias have debilitating sleepiness even with adequate sleep, leading to deteriorating academic performance, effects on mood and many other medical conditions later in life.
